Sector Overview – Retail

About the Sector:
Retail sector is witnessing unprecedented growth and India has emerged among the most desirable retail destinations in the world. India’s retail sector now stands at the cusp of fast-paced growth, one that could see it emerge as one of the fastest growing retail markets across the world. In fact, India has been ranked number one in 2017 Global Retail Development Index, which ranks the top 30 developing countries for retail investment worldwide.

The Indian retail industry has emerged as one of the most dynamic and fast-paced industries due to the entry of several new players. It accounts for over 10 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and around 8 per cent of the employment. India is the world’s fifth-largest global destination in the retail space.

The main sub-sectors of the Retail sector are:

1 Retail Operations Constitutes operations involve selling, management of goods flow, store maintenance, customer service and transaction processing.
2 FMCG Deals primarily with the production, distribution and marketing of a wide range of consumer products
3 Retail Business Constitutes activities undertaken to conduct profitable operations from trade or business either by self or through employer.
4 E-commerce Constitutes activities about business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) sales of products and services, through subscriptions to website content, or through advertising.

The retail sector is among the top three employers in India. The government’s move to allow FDI in various forms, coupled with the growing consumer demand, is expected to see it create even more jobs in the coming years.

According to the National Skill Development Corporation, India’s retail sector will have one of the highest incremental human resource requirements of 17.35 million till the year 2022.

Retail Trainee Associate (RAS/Q0103)


Job Description : Display merchandise and interact with customers to understand their needs to service them with sales of relevant product offerings whilst working cordially within the team and retail organization.
Key Focus Areas: The targeted and desired training outcomes post training completion are:

Technical competency


  • arrow Display stock to promote sales .
  • arrow Plan and prepare visual merchandising displays .
  • arrow Dismantle and store visual merchandising displays .
  • arrow Prepare products for sale .
  • arrow Promote loyalty schemes to customers .
  • arrow Provide information and advice to customers .
  • arrow Maintain health and safety

Communication skills


  • arrow Preparing for Interviews
  • arrow Understand and practice active listening
  • arrow Techniques to facilitate effective team and meeting communications
  • arrow Common reasons for interpersonal conflict
  • arrow Emotional Intelligence to deal with difficult situations

Computer Proficiency


  • arrow Ability to use computer systems and programs
  • arrow Familiarity with MS Office application (Knowledge of Basic Excel, Word, Power Point)
  • arrow Perform daily word processing tasks

Retail Sales Associate (RAS/Q0104)


Job Description : Interact with customers by giving specialized service and product demonstrations to maximize business in a retail environment whilst striving for continuous improvements in levels of services rendered
Key Focus Areas: The targeted and desired training outcomes post training completion are:

  • arrow Demonstrate products to customers and help them choose right products.
  • arrow Provide specialist support to customers facilitating purchases.
  • arrow Maximize sales of goods and services.
  • arrow Provide personalized sales & post-sales service support .

  • arrow Organize the delivery of reliable service.
  • arrow Improve customer relationship.
  • arrow Monitor and solve service concerns.
  • arrow Maintain health and safety.
  • arrow Help keep the store secure.

Distributor Salesman (RAS/Q0604)


Job Description : Interact with traders/retailers to understand their needs and service them by effecting sales of relevant products and identify new outlets to increase sales of the products and provide service facilitating resolution of trade problems related to products and company
Key Focus Areas: The targeted and desired training outcomes post training completion are:

Technical competency


  • arrow Be updated on knowledge of products to be sold and merchandising .
  • arrow Have thorough understanding of business and productivity targets and measures to achieve the same .
  • arrow Develop capability for handling credit management of an outlet both receivables and payables .
  • arrow Build good personal relationship with trade and means to handle objections & thereby issue resolution
  • arrow Make an effective sales call

Communication skills
