Sector Overview – IT/ITES

About the Sector:
The IT-ITeS industry is growing at a fast pace and its workforce requirements are also undergoing rapid change. Today, it demands a highly skilled and enabled manpower to continue the upward trend in its growth. It requires specialized talent to cater to the ever changing needs of the industry and to be able to maintain India’s leading position as the destination of choice for a skilled talent pool.

The global sourcing market in India continues to grow at a higher pace compared to the IT-BPM industry. The global IT & ITeS market (excluding hardware) reached US$ 1.2 trillion in 2016-17, while the global sourcing market increased by 1.7 times to reach US$ 173-178 billion. India remained the world’s top sourcing destination in 2016-17 with a share of 55 per cent. Indian IT & ITeS companies have set up over 1,000 global delivery centres in over 200 cities around the world.

More importantly, the industry has led the economic transformation of the country and altered the perception of India in the global economy. India's cost competitiveness in providing IT services, which is approximately 3-4 times cheaper than the US, continues to be the mainstay of its Unique Selling Proposition (USP) in the global sourcing market. However, India is also gaining prominence in terms of intellectual capital with several global IT firms setting up their innovation centres in India.

The IT industry has also created significant demand in the Indian education sector, especially for engineering and computer science. The Indian IT and ITeS industry is divided into four major segments – IT services, Business Process Management (BPM), software products and engineering services, and hardware.

The main sub-sectors thus identified as sub-sectors of the IT/ITES sector are :

S. No Sub Sectors Brief Description

2 Business Process Management Owns and manages the selected processes based on defined and measurable performance metrics. This shift is enabled by advancements in information and communication technologies.
3 Software Products SPD are programmes or code sets of any type, commercially available through sale, lease, rental or as a service. Packaged software revenues typically include fees for initial and continued right-to-use packaged software licenses.
4 Engineering research & development Associated with the creation of a product or service, as well as those associated with maximising the life span and optimising the yield associated with a product or asset. This not only includes design elements of the product or service itself, but also encompasses the infrastructure, equipment and processes engaged in manufacturing/ delivering them.

As per the National Skills Mission, 500 million professionals would need to be skilled by 2022 to make them employable.
