Suryamitra Project: Empowering India's Solar Energy Workforce

The National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) is an autonomous institute under India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. It was recently established by upgrading the old Solar Energy Centre. NISE is located on the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road in Gwal Pahari, Gurgaon, and serves as the main center for research and technology development in solar energy.

As part of its skill development initiatives, NISE is the main agency for the “Suryamitra Skill Development Programme (SSDP).” This program aims to train young people for jobs in the growing field of solar energy, including the installation, operation, and maintenance of solar power projects in India and abroad. The SSDP also helps candidates become entrepreneurs in the solar energy sector. It is a 600-hour residential program based on a specific qualification standard (SCG/Q0101).

The Suryamitra Project is a visionary initiative launched by the Government of India to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the solar energy sector. As India accelerates its commitment to renewable energy, Suryamitra Project, a pioneering initiative by Vision India, focuses on developing a skilled workforce to support the solar industry. This initiative provides comprehensive training, certification, and employment opportunities, ensuring that individuals are well-prepared to contribute to the country's renewable energy goals.

Key Features of the Suryamitra Project:

1. Training and Certification:

  • Skill Development: Comprehensive training programs designed to equip individuals with technical skills needed for various roles in solar energy sector. This includes installation, maintenance, and management of solar systems.

2. Experiential learning : Experiential learning in the Solar PV Installer course involves hands-on training that allows participants to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. Here are some key components:

3. Field Installations: Trainees work on actual solar panel installations, gaining practical experience in site assessment, system design, and installation techniques.

4. Simulated Environments: Using training labs that mimic real-world conditions, participants practice troubleshooting and maintenance of solar PV systems.

5. Workshops and Demonstrations: Engaging workshops led by industry professionals provide insights into best practices, safety protocols, and the latest technologies.

6. Project-Based Learning: Trainees collaborate on projects that require them to design and implement solar solutions, fostering teamwork and problem-solving skills.

7. Internships and Job Shadowing: Opportunities to intern with solar companies or shadow experienced installers allow trainees to observe and participate in daily operations.

8. Certification: Opportunities to intern with solar companies or shadow experienced installers allow trainees to observe and participate in daily operations.
